Stocking Stuffers can become really expensive once you start adding them up. Why not crochet your own. These projects can be used as pencil toppers, or as ornaments or even extra special gift wrap embellishments.
Stocking Stuffers — first crochet pattern
Cat Pencil Topper
This cat was inspired by a friend’s cat whose name was Morticia. A visitor once described Morticia as a circle with a tail.
Materials
- Lion Brand Yarns Vanna’s Choice medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (31/2 oz/170 yds/100g per ball): Black
- Crafter’s Choice® “Dry” polyester fiberfill
- Embroidery Floss: Green, Black and Pink
- Glue optional
- Pencil
Tools
- Crochet Hook—Size G6/4.00mm
- Lion Brand Split Ring Stitch Markers
- Embroidery Needle
- Scissors
Instructions
Body/Head
Rnd 1: With black yarn, ch 2. Work 6 sc in second chain from hook. Mark first st for beg of rnd; move marker up each rnd.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: *Sc in next 1sc, work 2 sc in the next sc; repeat from * (18 sc)
Rnds 4- 5: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 6: *Sc in sc, dec 1 in the next sc; repeat from * (12 sc)
Rnd 7: Dec 1 in each sc around.
Fasten off leave a tail for sewing.
Ear (make 2)
With black yarn, ch 2, dc in the second chain from the hook, sc in the same spot. Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.
Tail
Join black yarn to a stitch from the last round. You will work three separate sc into the body. The first sc where you joined the yarn. Work the second sc in the row above the first. Work the third sc in the row above the second sc. Ch 5. Starting with the second chain from the hook, work a sc in each ch st and the three sc. Fasten off yarn. Weave in ends and trim.
Hat—Instructions found under snowman.
Assemble/Embellish
- Attach ears to top of head. The inside edge of the ear touches the outside edge of the first round worked.
- Eyes—using three strands of green embroidery floss. Stitch floss over a stitch in the third round. Then use three strands of the black to create the pupil.
- Nose—using three strands of pink to add the nose.
- Stuff.
- Adding glue is optional. If you want to ensure that the cat stays in then place glue it. If you want the option to insert a new pencil when it is used up, then don’t glue.
- Tighten up the stitches around the pencil. Weave in yarn ends and trim.

Penguin Pencil Topper
Materials

- Small scrap of orange felt
- Glue
- Pen/pencil

Face/Body Applique—heart shape
To create the heart shape, you will work all the stitches into the first chain st.
With white yarn, ch 4. Work two trc into the first ch. Work 3 dc into the first ch, trc into the first ch, ch 1, 3 dc into the first ch, work 3 trc into the first ch, and slip to the first ch.

Assemble/Embellish
- Eyes—using all six strand of black embroidery floss, work a French knot stitch for each eyes.
- Beak—using three strands of orange embroidery floss add beak.
- Feet-cut a triangle of orange felt for the feet and glue into place.

- Tighten up the stitches around the pencil. Weave in yarn ends and trim.

Snowman Pencil Topper
Materials
- Lion Brand Yarn Bonbons – Jingle Bells 100% Premium Acrylic
- Crafter’s Choice® “Dry” polyester fiberfill
- Embroidery Floss: Orange
- Sewing thread
- Glue
- 5 3mm seed beads black
- 2 4mm druck beads black
Tools
- Crochet Hook—Size G6/4.00mm
- Lion Brand Split Ring Stitch Markers
- Embroidery Needle and regular needle
- Scissors
Instructions
Rnd 1: With white/silver yarn, ch 2. Work 6 sc in second chain from hook. Mark first st for beg of rnd; move marker up each rnd.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: *Sc in next 1 sc, work 2 sc in the next sc; repeat from * (18 sc)
Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sc, work 2 sc in the next sc; repeat from * (24 sc)
Rnds 5-6: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 7: *Sc in 2 sc, dec 1 in the next sc; repeat from * (18 sc)
Rnd 8: *Sc in sc, dec 1 in the next sc; repeat from * (12 sc)
Rnd 9: Dec 1 in each sc around.

Hat
Tip on changing hat shape. This hat is pointed because I only increased one stitch per round. If you would like a less pointed hat increase more stitches per round. Experiment until you have achieved the desired shape.
Rnd 1: With red yarn, ch 2. Work 3 sc in second chain from hook. Mark first st for beg of rnd; move marker up each rnd. (3 sc)
Rnds 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in sc, sc in 2 sc, join with first sc using a slip st. (4 sc)
Rnds 3-6: Ch 1, 2 sc into first sc, sc in remaining sts, join with slp st to first sc. (ending up with 8 sc) change yarn to white with red sparkle.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, *Sc in next 1sc, work 2 sc in the next sc; repeat from * (12 sc)
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with first sc using slip st. Fasten off and weave in ends.
If adding hat, then sew into place.
Assemble/Embellish
- Eye—Use the 4mm druk beads for the eyes. Sew eyes into place.
- Nose—Use three strands of the orange embroidery floss. Sew triangle nose.
- Mouth—Attach the 3mm black beads for the mouth.
- Adding glue is optional. If you want to ensure that the topper stays attached to the pencil then place glue it. If you want the option to insert a new pencil when it is used up, then don’t glue.
- Tighten up the stitches around the pencil. Weave in yarn ends and trim.
